The next version of Windows

Nikhil Dev | July 28, 2007 | 10:01 pm

Just today I was going through one of these feeds from Engadget and there was one very interesting piece of information out there. This is what it read as “Although Vista still seems fresh as a daisy, that hasn’t stopped Microsoft from planning their next major OS release, and it looks like a part of the plan is changing the internal codename from Vienna to “7.” The switch was disclosed at at a Microsoft sales training conference in Orlando this past week as part of the company’s new “iterative” information-sharing plan, which aims to provide customers and partners with more and more info as part of a predictable release schedule. Microsoft also confirmed that 7 is scheduled to be in development for three years, which we kinda-sorta already knew. No word on when we might ever see Vista SP1, of course, but we bet all those customers and partners are still pretty psyched to know the new codename for a product that’s three years out.”

I think Microsoft seriously needs to think about doing one thing at a time. I used to have Vista ultimate installed on my computer before I switched back to Xp. The reason of the switching? Vista is just too processor and graphics intensive, too big, too many unwanted features and above all, a lot more buggy. Xp has stabilized to quite and extent that now I do consider it as an Operating system.

If microsoft had to take my suggestions, I have some for them.

First of all, I think the software in the operating system should be more managed like with Linux. The user should have an option to select what he wants and what he does not want. If someone needs a piece of software, he should be able to pay only for that rather than having to pay for the whole load of crap that Vista comes bundled with. If something like this was implemented, my cost for the operating system would be just about 30% of what I am paying now as mostly I tend to use all open source application on my computer.

Microsoft claims to be quite a grown up and superior company but are you sure that Microsoft is looking into what the users want as well? Cmon, you need to make software for the people THE WAY THEY WANT. You can just make a bundle of shit and expect them to buy just cos they are so used to your products that now you can take them for a ride.

Starting utilizing the power of open source and I would say start donating small amounts to people who work on them. That is what will keep those people going and in the end improve the quality of computer software.
